Hand Collected Native Alabama Wildflower Seed

Cohn Flowers has over twenty years of experience propagating wildflowers and helping clients incorporate these beautiful native plants into their garden designs.  At Cohn Flowers, we hand collect each individual seed from plants grown on our site in Jefferson County, Alabama.

Hand collecting insures that each packet is filled with active, viable seeds, undamaged by harvesting.  We also limit our wildflower selection to flowers that are known to thrive in the local ecosystem insuring that the seed stock is healthy and acclimated to the local growing conditions.

Our seeds can be purchased in individual packages or in gift packs along with beautiful photo note card and linen envelope, making them a unique and inexpensive gift for any occasion.  A new mother will be thrilled to watch colorful wildflowers reappear each year, reminding her of the joy of new life.  A bride will treasure a yearly reminder of her joyous wedding, and graduates can take a piece of home with them as they travel off to college.  These gifts that truly “keep giving” year after year.

About The Owner

Owner, Rebecca Cohn, has grown wildflowers for the past 24 years, during which time she also worked closely with the Birmingham Botanical Gardens in support of this fine public garden.  She has completed an extensive horticulture program at Alabama’s Jefferson State Junior College, qualifying her to enter the garden design field as well.  Eight years ago, she established her first planting at Black Jack Farms in Jefferson County, for what would become Cohn Flowers.

History

Born of a idea in the late 1990’s, Cohn Flowers was established to offer gardeners in the Southeast a local seed stock.

Cohn Flowers was founded on the principal of offering the highest quality wildflower seed possible, by using strict quality control measures.  All seeds are collected by hand to prevent contamination; they are dried, cleaned, and sent to a certified seed laboratory for germination testing before being packaged.  The original seeds were collected from prairies within the state to ensure that they are truly native to the area.

These carefully collected seeds were then germinated and seedlings were planted at Black Jack Farms for future seed production.  Five years later, after establishing these healthy plants, the first seeds were collected and packaged for sale in 2004.  Each year additional seed species have been added to our product line.  The patience necessary to grow strong seed plants is reflected in our product, the finest quality available to gardeners.

Future Goals

Cohn Flowers continues to slowly expand the range of flowers offered to our clients.  By necessity, this is a slow process, as cultivating healthy seed stock can take several seasons.
